What is Karaoke? |

Karaoke can be roughly translated as 'Empty Orchestra' Believed to have originated in Japan but now popular in almost every country in the world as a mainstream form of entertainment. Lyrics are usually displayed on a TV screen to enable anyone to sing along with backing tracks on the disc. |

A basic system would comprise of a microphone and amplifier with a music source which is usually a CD player with a means of displaying the lyrics on a TV screen. CD-G players enable the lyrics to be viewed on a screen to guide singers, so it is not necessary to learn all the words of a song before you can sing it. |

Although DVD discs are gaining popularity, a format know as CD-G is still the most used and the most popular system for Karaoke. The CD-G system uses discs which can ply audio on a normal CD player but have embedded codes which will display the lyrics to the song on a screen, usually changing colour to keep time with the music. |
